The first first Hamilton County existed only on paper for a few weeks in 1842. The first Hamilton County, Texas, was created by the Sixth Congress of the Republic of Texas in February of 1842 by carving a chunk of real estate from Montgomery and Houston Counties in Southeast Texas (NE of the city of Houston). However, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Texas ruled its creation to be unconstitutional–so the first Hamilton County in the State of Texas was abolished before it was organized.
The second Hamilton County was formed in 1858 in Central Texas by the Texas Legislature. A lot has happened since then.
This document has been prepared to preserve and to honor the memory of the brave men and women who ventured into a new county to create our heritage. Many of the communities, schools, and churches they established have vanished. — ECW
